Since 1971, the Cooperative de Safran in Kozani has had the exclusive responsibility of the entire production of Greek red saffron, which is a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) product.

Krocus Kozanis Products S.A., established in 2007, is a joint venture between the Cooperative de Safran and KORRES Natural Products. Its purpose is to promote Greek saffron, and has presented, for the first time internationally, an organic herbal tea collection with this exquisite ingredient.

The purple saffron flower, with its valuable red stigmas, blossoms only once a year. The manual harvest is followed by the stigmas’ drying, which requires experience and skillfulness to make sure they retain all quality properties unaltered. A 150,000 blooms, handpicked by villagers during harvest, yield only 1 kilo of dried stigmas, a painstaking process that rightly gives the Greek saffron the title of earth’s gold.
